Sillustani Burial Towers Overview
The Sillustani Chullpas represent pre-Inca burial structures. These towers are positioned northwest of Puno city approximately 34 kilometers away. Access is gained via the Puno-Juliaca highway. Sillustani is situated opposite the direction of Lake Titicaca’s islands requiring travel to a smaller lake. The location of Sillustani is at 3840 meters above sea level which is 12598 feet. The site consists of circular stone funerary towers. The structures are located strategically bordering Umayo Lagoon. Andean ideology emphasized the significance of the deceased. Selected sites for final rest were chosen for their aesthetic qualities. These locations held sacred status.
